The Akwa Ibom State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has confirmed that an accident at Etim Ekpo Roundabout on November 11 claimed three lives.
FRSC Sector Commander Edward Odiete, who confirmed this in a statement in Uyo on Wednesday, said the cause of the accident was due to reckless driving by the driver who refused to obey traffic rules and regulations.
JulietEmpire recalls that a truck rammed into a structure at Etim Ekpo Roundabout, leading to the deaths of three persons while others were wounded.
Odiete said FRSC operatives who arrived at the scene moved the injured to a nearby hospital while the three corpses were deposited in a mortuary.
The statement read: “A fatal crash occurred on Nov. 11 at Etim Ekpo roundabout by 7:30 pm. The lone crash involved a Howo truck that ran into structures at the roundabout.
“One female and two male adults were confirmed dead, while others sustained injuries of various degrees. When an inquiry was made as to the cause of the crash, it was gathered that the causal factor to the crash was reckless driving that resulted in the loss of control, according to eyewitnesses. After evacuation of the victims, the road was cleared of the wreckage to enable free flow of traffic.”
The sector commander stressed that the incident could have been avoided had the driver observed certain degrees of safety measures and adhered strictly to traffic rules and regulations.
Odiete urged passengers to adhere to the theme of this year’s ember months campaign, which is “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers Than Drivers.”
